Bernedoodle Genetics

Bernedoodles are able to harness the best attributes of both the Bernese Mountain Dog & the Poodle. This is known as the “hybrid vigor.”

The Poodle genetics give them their intelligent, goofy and witty qualities, making them easy to train and housebreak. Along with that, the poodle genetics make bernedoodles virtually shed free and great for families with allergies!

The Bernese Mountain Dog genetics give them a playful, social, and loyal personality, making them the perfect companion dog. They are awesome with children and make a great choice for a family dog!

Bernese Mountain Dogs nearly went extinct in the late 1800s, and the effort to bring them back resulted in inbreeding which led to various health issues. As a result, they sadly have a relatively short lifespan (6-8 years). Crossing with the Poodle allows the bernedoodle to keep the Bernese qualities that so many people adore, while also having a much longer lifespan (14-17 years).

They truly do bring out the best of both breeds for you to enjoy in your home!

Generations of Bernedoodles

Depending on the parent dogs, there are many genetic variations of Bernedoodles. The two generations that we currently breed at Bernedoodle Kennels are:

F1 – Cross between a purebred Poodle & purebred Bernese Mountain Dog.
F1b – Cross between a purebred Poodle & an F1 Bernedoodle, or cross between a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog & an F1 Bernedoodle.

Benefits of the Bernedoodle Hybrid

Low to Non-Shedding

One of the biggest benefits of the Bernedoodle hybrid is that they will hardly shed, if at all. This quality comes from the Poodle, and our pups make an excellent choice for someone that is looking for this quality in a dog! The rule of thumb is the curlier the coat, the less likely it will be that they will shed.

Allergy Friendly

While most dogs can cause problems for allergy sufferers, Bernedoodles are a great option for people who suffer from pet allergies. So, don’t be afraid to cuddle with your new four legged friend! Due to the higher percentage of Poodle in their genetics, F1b pups are best for people with allergies.

Family Friendly

Bernedoodles are playful and affectionate, and they do very well with children and other pets. They are extremely social and love attention, and are very loyal and devoted to their family members!

Intelligent

Just like their Poodle ancestors, Bernedoodles are incredibly intelligent and eager to learn. They typically pick up training easily and love to learn new tricks! We have had great feedback from people that have adopted our pups on this!
